Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of daily stress and coping style with health problems in 6th grade children of elementary school.

Methods : The subjects included 316 6th grade children of elementary school in Pusan. The instrument used in this survey were the Han and Yoo¡¯s Daily Hassles Scale for Korean children(1995), the Lazarus - Folkman¡¯s Stress Coping Style Questionnaire(1984) and the Shin¡¯s Health Problems Questionnaire(1996). The data were collected from 25 June to 14 July 2001. Answer to each question ranged from 1 to 4 and high score meant more stressful, frequently used coping method, and prevalent health problem. Relationship of daily stress and coping style with health problems was examined with Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the factors that have effect on the health problems.

Results : The mean score of daily stress was 1.44 and the highest score of 1.74 was recorded in the area of study. Active coping methods were more frequently used than passive and esoteric methods. The mean score of health problems was 1.43 and most prevalent health problem was making a mistake in company. There was a moderate correlation between daily stress and health problems (r=0.65, p ≶ 0.01) and a weak correlation between coping style and health problems (r=0.24, p ≶ 0.01) Daily stress was correlated with coping style (r=0.33, p ≶ 0.01). Daily stress, health perception, health concern and sex of child were identified as significant variables for explaining health problems and these variables accounted for 50.1% of health problems variance.

Conclusions : This study revealed that daily stress was the most important factor related to health problems in 6th grade children of elementary school. It is suggested that a nursing intervention should be provided to relieve daily stress for health promotion of children.
